Riders saving lives in Lesotho

first_imgThe Lesotho branch of Riders for Health operates in some of the most rugged terrain in Africa. (Image: Riders for Health) Riders for Health, the motorbike-based charity arm of the MotoGP racing championship, is inviting its supporters to take part in an inspirational ride through Lesotho, where they will help raise funds for the organisation and experience its work first-hand.Experience Africa is touted as “an adventure for the heart and mind”. It was launched at the International Motorcycle and Scooter Show in November 2009 by Riders co-founder and multiple MotoGP champion Randy Mamola, and takes to the road in October 2010.The eight-day trip can accommodate a limited number of riders. Details are expected imminently, and interested off-road biking fanatics are encouraged to email [email protected] to make sure they don’t miss out on any announcements.Mamola has already ridden the route, which encompasses some of the famous Roof of Africa rally’s roads, and confessed to being overwhelmed by the experience.“I have had the most incredible 10 days riding in the wonderful country of Lesotho,” he said at the launch. “The Riders for Health Experience Africa ride is sure to be a life-changing experience.”The NGO’s country director Mahali Hlasa, the Riders’ first female trainer, will chaperone the adventuresome group.Experience Africa participants, who pay £5 000 (R58 819) upfront, are assured that £2 000 (R23 525) of that sum will go directly to the Riders initiative. Flights, accommodation, motorbikes, meals, and mechanical and medical support are covered by the remainder. A valid motorbike licence is a prerequisite. They will ride through the mountainous country to raise funds and awareness of the organisation’s ongoing work, and will also be able to get a personal glimpse into the outreach projects already underway. They can expect to interact with health workers in the country, riding with them to isolated areas and experiencing how reliable transport has transformed their jobs. They will also visit clinics and communities and see how the treatment of HIV/Aids and tuberculosis is accelerating because of increased accessibility to medicines and education.Riding to save livesRiders for Health is the official charity of the Grand Prix motorbike championship, or MotoGP. The organisation operates in Gambia, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania and Lesotho, with projects completed in Ghana, Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. Its patron is HRH The Princess Royal.Lesotho is in particularly dire need of the Riders’ assistance. The tiny kingdom lies among the soaring peaks of the Drakensberg and Maluti mountains, and this harsh terrain is often difficult to navigate with conventional vehicles. Even those with four-wheel drives can struggle.Lesotho is the only country on earth whose entire altitude lies over 1 000m above sea level. Its lowest point is at the junction of the Orange and Makhaleng Rivers at 1 400m, and its highest is the Thabana Ntlenyana peak at 3 482m. More than 80% of the country lies higher than 1 800m.The kingdom has been hard hit by the global HIV/Aids epidemic. About 25% of the adult population is thought to be HIV-positive, according to international Aids charity Avert. This is where the Riders’ work is so crucial. People living in more remote areas have to make their own way to reach basic facilities such as shops and clinics – sometimes trudging for hours and in freezing temperatures.Using motorbikes to navigate tricky terrain, Riders for Health brings care to communities that otherwise might have no help at all. Working hand in hand with the Ministry of Health and related bodies, the organisation enables health workers to easily reach their patients, and also transports medical samples to laboratories for testing and diagnosis.Mobilising the biker communityThe organisation was born out of the concern and interest of a group of people working on the MotoGP circuit in the 1980s. Some of them, including Mamola, visited Lesotho in the late 1980s and were dismayed to see the many broken-down cars that could not be fixed because of lack of expertise. The group decided to take action by developing innovative ways of managing vehicles in difficult conditions, and at the same time began mobilising support for a new transport initiative that would minimise the toll taken by rough terrain on less hardy vehicles. The international motorbike community responded enthusiastically and continues to give prominence to the scheme at events such as the British Grand Prix and the annual Riders/MotoGP Day of Champions. The first national programme was run in Lesotho in 1991, followed three years later by another in Zimbabwe. The organisation is based in the UK but has branches in a number of European countries as well.last_img read more

3 Reasons Why Less Is More When Directing Talent

first_imgAmateur directors often overcompensate for their lack of experience by overdirecting their actors. Here are some ways to take a more subtle approach. All images from IMDbDirecting talent is no easy task. Even for the most experienced directors out there, handling different personality types, performance disciplines, and other factors make communication very challenging. With that said though, more experienced directors tend to give far less direction than inexperienced directors for these three reasons:Understanding the Chain ReactionExperienced directors understand that a single piece of direction will change many different characteristics of a performance. For instance, if a director were to tell their talent to act ‘more upset,’ the actor would likely change other physical attributes as well. They may walk slower, speak differently, slouch, etc. Amateur directors often micromanage the actor, whereas a more experienced director understands that, with the right singular piece of direction, everything else falls into place.Keeping the Actor FocusedPerforming for camera and in front of a large crew is challenging enough as it is, so it makes sense that too much direction can overwhelm an actor, causing them to lose focus. If a director were to feed an actor with 10 or 15 pieces of direction right before a scene, that actor will likely lose focus of the scene and become preoccupied with the technicalities of what the director is telling them. By keeping direction down to a few points or less, actors can remain focused and in the right headspace.Avoiding Negative ConnotationsSome actors, especially those with less experience, can mistakenly take direction as a sign that they aren’t doing a good enough job. In reality, they’re probably doing just fine – but maybe aren’t performing in a way that’s most suitable to the script. As you might imagine, feeding what could be an already insecure actor a dozen directorial notes after a scene may come across negatively to them, and subsequently uproot their entire performance.Always remember that the job of an actor is extremely difficult, and they’re still human. Encourage them to take risks and to change their performance in a positive way by giving clear and simple direction – and only when completely necessary. Here are a few more tips for aspiring directors, courtesy of PremiumBeat:4 Mistakes Nearly Every Director Makes on SetHow to Direct Scenes Containing Minimal DialogueHoning Your Craft: Find Your Voice as a DirectorDo you have any directing advice to share? All Deals Are Not Created Equal

first_img Essential Reading! Get my first book: The Only Sale Guide You’ll Ever Need “The USA Today bestseller by the star sales speaker and author of The Sales Blog that reveals how all salespeople can attain huge sales success through strategies backed by extensive research and experience.” Buy Now All the deals you make are not created equal. In fact, some are far more valuable than others. Some are worth far less than you might imagine, even if your client spends a lot of money.Sales with no profit: These deals are empty calories. They have no nutritional value. You can’t execute for your clients without being a profitable business. Revenue is vanity, and profit is sanity. If you can’t make money, there is no reason to take the client. Listen, I know the logo may be great, and you may believe that they serve the strategic value of allowing you to win more clients, but you can net a few bucks and still land the client. If you can’t, that’s a sales problem.Sales to nightmare clients: There is no reason to do business with bad people. There is no reason to work with people who do things that are illegal, immoral, or people who are generally miserable. They’ll mistreat you and your people, and they destroy your culture in the bargain.Sales where the client didn’t really agree to change: There are some people who agree to move their business to you specifically because your competitor is terrible. Well, that’s what they tell you. What you will discover is that some people blame their partner for not being able to produce the results they need because they are unwilling to make the changes they need to make on their end. You pick up your end of the stick, and they refuse to pick up theirs.Sales that take time and energy away from quality sales: There are some sales that take more time and more energy than they are worth. They prevent you from devoting your time and attention to bigger, better, more meaningful opportunities. You can spend as much time and energy winning a small deal as you can winning a big deal. It can also take the same resources to serve small clients, resources that will then be unavailable to your dream clients, once you win them.Notice that transactional sales did not make this list. Even though you should be strategic, and you should be growing as a trusted advisor, transactional sales are not negative—only transactional behaviors are, and only when something else is needed. There are very high quality sales that are nothing but transactions, and there is some portion of transactional sales that are of low quality. If you are going to sell anyway, you might as well invest your time and energy in high quality sales. You are a reflection of the clients that you serve.last_img read more

Naga groups pushing for separate flag: Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister

first_imgNagaland Deputy Chief Minister Y. Patton has said that the signing of the Naga peace accord will take a few more days and that the Naga groups, including the NSCN(IM), will keep negotiating for a separate constitution and flag.Mr. Patton, who also holding the Home portfolio, said Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and he were seeking an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to get clarity on their future role.“The signing of the final Naga agreement will not take much time as major groups are on board. We want to know what will be the role of the present government after the accord is sealed. This is the issue we want to discuss with the Prime Minister and the Home Minister,” Mr. Patton, who reached Delhi on Friday, told The Hindu.Mr. Rio is also in Delhi.Mr. Patton said they would have to speak to the neighbouring States of Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh amid the possible creation of autonomous councils in Naga-populated areas.“Now they (Centre) will have to tell us the truth, they cannot hide from us any more. The Governor is having discussions with NNPGs and NSCN-IM; things are almost settled but I cannot say anything before it is finalised,” he said.Manipur has been on edge as the peace agreement reaches its final stages.Naga interlocutor R.N. Ravi, who is also Nagaland’s Governor, is holding final discussions with National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah) and Naga National Political Groups (NNPG) in the last leg of meetings in Delhi.Lt. Gen. (retd) Shokin Chauhan, chairman of the ceasefire monitoring group, said the situation in Nagaland was peaceful and he was deputed to speak to the NSCN-IM to sort out any apprehension they might have.“I spoke to them (NSCN-IM) on the Centre’s behalf. Most of them were worried about their safety, like what will happen to their cadres, weapons etc after the agreement is signed. I was available to listen to them,” Lt. Gen. (retd) Chauhan said. The armed group, which signed a ceasefire in 1997, has been operating from a camp in Hebron in Nagaland.NSCN-IM statementOn October 31, the NSCN-IM released a statement that the negotiating team led by T. Muivah, has extended his gratitude to various civil society groups including the church and that “God has answered your (Naga people) prayers and they are now able to take positive steps towards a final solution.”Earlier, the Centre had accused the NSCN-IM with which it signed a framework agreement to find a solution to the decades-old Naga issue in 2015 of delaying the talks. However, on Thursday, Mr. Ravi said the armed group was back on board and the final discussions were underway. The NSCN-IM has been fighting for ‘Greater Nagaland’ or Nagalim — it wants to extend Nagaland’s borders by including Naga-dominated areas in neighbouring Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh — to unite 1.2 million Nagas. The Centre has however, ruled out any disintegration of the States of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur in order to merge the Naga-inhabited areas with the existing State of Nagaland. The NNPG in a statement had claimed that Centre has “endorsed the usage of Naga emblem/flag specifically for cultural identity within Naga homeland.”last_img read more

Knicks send Kristaps Porzingis to Dallas, say he requested a trade

first_imgMOST READ Once that happened, they decided to trade the All-Star forward who was thought to be one of the key players for their future.“When he came in today, it was clear to us that it was time to pull the trigger on something,” Knicks President Steve Mills said.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingSPORTSUrgent reply from Philippine ‍football chiefSPORTSWin or don’t eat: the Philippines’ poverty-driven, world-beating pool starsThat was a seven-player swap with the Dallas Mavericks that also netted New York two future first-round draft picks and possibly enough room to afford two top free agents this summer.Porzingis has been sidelined for nearly a year after tearing his left ACL. The Knicks said recently he would undergo testing during the middle of February that could have determined if he would be able to return this season. If it does, it will be in Dallas, where he can form an intriguing international frontcourt with rookie Luka Doncic. Both played professionally in Spain before coming to the NBA as top-five picks. The Knicks acquired Dennis Smith Jr., DeAndre Jordan and Wesley Matthews in the deal, while also sending guards Tim Hardaway Jr., Trey Burke and Courtney Lee to Dallas. New York general manager Scott Perry said the Knicks would get an unprotected pick in 2021 and the other pick would be in 2023.“We feel like we did the right thing,” Mills said. “When you’re trying to think about how you want to build your team for the long term, you don’t want to commit a max (contract) to a player who clearly says to you he doesn’t want to be here,” Mills said. The 7-foot-3 Porzingis was the No. 4 pick in 2015 and averaged 17.8 points and 7.1 rebounds in New York, where he was expected to be the Knicks’ franchise player for years. But they declined to give him a contract extension before this season — they say he was in agreement with that decision — and now by trading him and Hardaway seem instead to be gearing up to pursue players in free agency, with nearly $70 million in cap space.Hardaway has two more years and about $37 million left on his contract, and moving that was necessary if the Knicks were going to find a way to open the most cap space possible.ADVERTISEMENT Don’t miss out on the latest news and information. The Latvian has 3-point range on offense and shot-blocking skills on defense, and had made his first All-Star team just before tearing his ACL after a dunk against Milwaukee on Feb. 6.He had been frustrated with the franchise before, skipping his exit meeting after his second season before returning to Europe for the summer. But Knicks coach David Fizdale had said Porzingis was frequently around the team even while he couldn’t play, taking part in meetings and some activities on the court. However, Mills and Perry saw otherwise, noticing how often Porzingis was in the gym and how long he stayed when he did come.He was there Thursday, and after a meeting the Knicks had their answers.“We wanted a confirmation from him whether he was completely in or out,” Mills said, “and he made it clear to us when he came in to meet with us that no longer wanted to be part of our group.”The most valuable player in the deal from the Knicks’ standpoint is likely Smith, the point guard they passed on with the No. 8 pick in 2017 when they instead took Frank Ntilikina. The Mavericks took Smith one pick later, and he posted the second triple-double of his career Wednesday when Dallas won at Madison Square Garden.Jordan is a former U.S. Olympian and top defensive center.
