Kolkata: The West Bengal circle of the Department of Posts is taking significant measures to tap the tourism potential of the General Post Office (GPO) that will be stepping into its 150th year on Tuesday.”The GPO is already very much in the tourist map and the postal museum attracts a good number of visitors daily. We will unveil a permanent exhibition hall inside the GPO building on Tuesday. Apart from philatelic exhibitions, we will also hold art or exhibitions of similar nature to attract more number of people here,” said Chief Post Master General (PMG), West Bengal Circle, Arundhaty Ghosh. Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal lifeThe GPO will arrange visits for school children at the premises of the GPO for witnessing such exhibitions and creating awareness that letter writing, which is on the wane in the days of WhatsApp and texting, is an art and needs revival.The sesquicentennial celebration for the GPO kicked off on Monday with the unveiling of a special cover and the extension of the postal museum was also thrown open for the public.According to a senior GPO official, personal letters now account for less than 20 percent of the postal items that are dispatched through the GPO daily while official mails are more than one lakh per day. When I visit schools for work related to the department and ask students why they have stopped writing letters they say they are not taught how to write one. They tell me if I teach them they will write letters. Letter writing is one of the best forms of expressing oneself and we hold letter writing competition once every year both at the state and national level to revive the art of letter writing,” Ghosh added. Speaking on the occasion, PMG (Kolkata) J Charukesi said people have an emotional connection with the GPO and go there with the hope that they will get the best of services.”The most important aspect of the GPO is the professional services we offer,” she added.The GPO is a heritage building and at the same time a working post office. “Our employees have tirelessly worked for conservation of this historic building whose conservation is a real challenge. Let us take pledge for its further conservation in the days to come,” Ghosh added.
