Label language continues to confuse consumers

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest I have always been curious about what goes through a person’s mind while shopping at the grocery store. In the past couple of weeks, I have read several articles regarding consumer surveys, gauging consumer wants and purchasing habits when at the grocery store. I shared one such article in my weekly online newsletter titled, “Informed Consumers Won’t Pay More For ‘Natural’.” In this experiment researchers at Arizona State University polled 663 beef eaters about their willingness to pay for steak labeled with different attributes, one of which being natural. Half of the participants were provided with the definition of natural and half were not.In summary, those who were provided the definition of “natural” were not willing to pay the extra price per pound for the natural label alone. However, those consumers who were not informed on the definition were willing to pay a premium for the product. This leads me to ask the following question: Are you an informed consumer? In case it wasn’t clear, and often it’s not, USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service considers all fresh meat “natural.” However, beef that carries a “natural” label cannot contain any artificial flavors, coloring, chemical preservatives or other artificial ingredients. Additionally, natural products must not be more than “minimally processed.” Ground beef falls under the minimally processed umbrella, so it can be labeled natural.Label claims on food can be very confusing to consumers, and adding unnecessary information would only add to that confusion. Some additional label claims include: free range, pasture raised, antibiotic free, partially produced with genetic engineering and a whole list of others. While some of these statements accurately describe a product, they may also be misleading.Research tends to show that many consumers are not always informed with regards to claims on food labels. Another study from Oklahoma State University polled 1,000 consumers, of which 8 of 10 supported mandatory labeling of DNA on food products. This one leaves me scratching my head. I understand that most consumers probably receive little gain from understanding genetics and DNA, but I would sure hope that they understand that the vast majority of food comes from living organisms. Somewhere along the line it appears those folks removed from science and agriculture have forgotten that very simple, but important concept.Ilya Somin, in an editorial for the Washington Post, purposed the following label in the event that the government mandated a DNA label claim:WARNING: This product contains deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). The Surgeon General has determined that DNA is linked to a variety of diseases in both animals and humans. In some configurations, it is a risk factor for cancer and heart disease. Pregnant women are at very high risk of passing on DNA to their children. While I share this suggested label in good humor, it just goes to show the value of unbiased scientific research, which happens to be one of the guiding principles of the Extension system. Take some time to research some of the food labels of the various products that you purchase and become and informed consumer. There is a wealth of information on a food label, from nutrition, production practices, and marketing.last_img read more

N. American Subway, Light Rail Augmented Reality App Ready & Waiting for iPhone 3.1

first_img9 Books That Make Perfect Gifts for Industry Ex… 5 Outdoor Activities for Beating Office Burnout Tags:#Augmented Reality#NYT#Product Reviews#web Related Posts Discover Anywhere Mobile, a Toronto-based mobile travel guide publishing startup, announced today that it has completed an iPhone app with Augmented Reality (AR) views of subway, light rail, train and airport data for 33 cities throughout North America. That app will be made available as soon as the next version of the iPhone Operating System is launched to the public.Discover Anywhere’s implementation of AR looks well-suited to the needs of users, but we asked company President David Janes why users would need an AR view at all. Why wouldn’t a list of nearby transit stops and a map be enough. Janes offered an interesting explanation of Augmented Reality’s value. 12 Unique Gifts for the Hard-to-Shop-for People… The AR view in Discover Anywhere’s app is just one of three, map and list views are also available for all data sets.“In my mind, AR is a feature rather than a product,” Janes told us. “It’s something that we think would be useful for our customers. For example, I was in Atlanta a few weeks ago and walked out of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) downtown. Even knowing that the MARTA existed would have been useful then – but when we got out it would be great to be able to orient yourself toward landmarks. It’s the ‘oh yeah, there it is’ experience.”That makes sense. The integration of an Augmented Reality view with more traditional lists and maps seems likely to make orienting yourself all the easier.IPhone 3Gs owners will be able to make up their own minds on the finer points of Augmented Reality User Experience as soon as the next, AR supporting, OS is rolled out. We had expected that to occur as early as next month, but now it’s looking like the wait may be a little bit longer. marshall kirkpatrick 4 Keys to a Kid-Safe Applast_img read more

5 ways businesses can cultivate a data-driven culture

first_imgThe pressure on organizations to make accurate and timely business decisions has turned data into an important strategic asset for businesses. In today’s dynamic marketplace, the ability for businesses to use data to identify challenges, spot opportunities, and adapt to change with agility is critical to its survival and long-term success. Therefore, it has become an absolute necessity for businesses to establish an objective, data-driven culture that empowers employees with the capabilities and skills they need to analyze data and use the insights extracted from it to facilitate a faster, more accurate decision-making process.See also: Are big data analytics more important than the cloud?Contrary to what many people think, cultivating a data-driven culture is not just a one-time transformation. Instead, it’s more like a journey that requires efforts from employees and direction from both managers and executives. In this article, I am sharing five different ways businesses can accelerate their transformation into a data-driven enterprise.#1. Establish a clear visionEstablishing a clear vision is essential for putting data into the DNA of an organization. An executive, preferably the CIO or CDO, should present the vision to the workforce and provide the rationale for this shift in culture and in benefits. This, in turn, will set the stage for the work ahead and provide an opportunity to clear misconceptions.#2. Ensure easy, secure access to dataData can be considered an asset when its accuracy is trusted, its provenance is well established, and its security is ensured. On the other hand, optimal utilization of data requires governance and openness. To ensure this, you should consider a layered approach to make data available in a manner for which its security, governance, and confidentiality is not compromised.#3. Keep your data clean and up-to-dateIt’s very hard to analyze and extract something valuable from poorly organized, inaccurate, dated information. Therefore, you should develop clear mechanisms regarding the collection, storage, and analysis of data. Make sure all your data inputs are centralized in a single location for easy integration and regular updates. This way, your employees can gather the most recent information from a single place and make more accurate decisions.#4. Create agile multi-disciplinary teamsPeople, not tools drive the culture of a company. Therefore, in order to create a fact-driven work environment, businesses should invest in the skills of their people. Make sure that each team contains at least one member who’s well-skilled and experienced at data analytics. The data-driven journey requires retraining of the job force in analytical skills as well as in mindset, so that the employees can understand how data-driven decisions are made and how they contribute to the growth and performance of the company. Put simply, big data and analytics training and education are imperative for establishing a data-driven culture. The selection of right data analytics and visualization tools also drive the data adeptness of your employees. While Hadoop and Spark are the market leaders when it comes to big data technology, there are other analytics solutions available as well that can offer you great value. Some of these include SAS, R, Python, and Tableau. Regardless of the platform you select, it is important to provide your workforce training on how to make the best use of the available data analytics resources.#5. Develop reward mechanismsSharing data successes is important to inspire others and develop a healthy, competitive, data-driven culture. To share the results achieved by a team or an individual, you can use different communication tools, such as videos and blogs, organize special gatherings, or share the results on your company portal. Make sure that you choose initiatives that are in line with your company’s long-term strategy. For example, if your objective is to penetrate new markets or gather more information about your target customers, you should acknowledge and reward the initiatives that help you make progress towards these strategic goals. For example, if your objective is to penetrate new markets or gather more information about your target customers, you should acknowledge and reward the initiatives that help you make progress towards these strategic goals.Unless communicated across an organization, data remains worthless. To extract the right information and insights from structured and unstructured data, it is important that you focus your efforts on cultivating a data-driven culture that empowers employees with the resources and skills they need to leverage data and obtain the right information at the right time to make more accurate decisions. To extract the right information and insights from structured and unstructured data, it is important that you focus your efforts on cultivating a data-driven culture that empowers employees with the resources and skills they need to leverage data and obtain the right information at the right time to make more accurate decisions. File vision document for protection of Taj Mahal: SC to UP govt

first_imgIndia’s cleaning quandary: How to scale the Taj Mahal dome?  Meanwhile, the state government filed a separate application for cutting 234 trees for laying pipelines for water supply in Agra city. The bench, however, directed the state to apprise it as how many tress have already been planted in the TTZ and posted the matter for hearing after four weeks. The top court had earlier said that “ad hoc” measures were not enough to preserve the Taj Mahal for “a few hundred years” and directed the state government to prepare a document with a futuristic vision to protect the historic 17th century mausoleum for future generations.Environmentalist M.C. Mehta, who had filed a plea seeking protection of the Taj from the ill-effects of polluting gases and deforestation in and around the area, had earlier told the bench that the TTZ was an “ecologically sensitive area” and the government should have come out with a comprehensive policy for preservation and protection of the Taj.The apex court, which is dealing with Mr. Mehta’s petition, has been monitoring development in the area to protect the Taj Mahal, built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal in 1631. The mausoleum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Supreme Court today directed the Uttar Pradesh government to file within four weeks a vision document for protection and preservation of the Taj Mahal. The apex court also directed the state government to explain why there was a sudden flurry of activities in and around the Taj Mahal and the Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ) and why leather industries and hotels were coming up there.TTZ is an area of about 10,400 sq kms spread over the districts of Agra, Firozabad, Mathura, Hathras and Etah in Uttar Pradesh and Bharatpur in Rajasthan.“You file the vision document within four weeks,” a bench comprising Justices M.B. Lokur and Deepak Gupta said.“There is sudden flurry of activities in TTZ. Is there any particular reason for that? Leather industries and hotels are coming up there. Why?” the bench asked Additional Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta, who was appearing for the state.Mr. Mehta told the top court that he would get instructions on this issue and get back to it.Also Readlast_img read more

Greece 200-1 Shot in World Cup

first_imgTweetPinShare0 Shares If you’re a betting man and missed your chance to score a fortune by not picking Buster Douglas at 42-1 to beat Mike Tyson for the World Heavyweight Championship, you could get rich betting on Greece to win the World Cup in soccer – what the world outside of the U.S. calls football – in 2014 in Brazil, as the Greeks are a 200-1 shot.Greece got a decent draw being in Group C with Japan, Colombia and Ivory Coast and will be appearing in a second straight world title run after a disastrous 1996 appearance in the U.S. where a ho-hum team of older veterans went through the motions, being outscored 10-0 in three games and sent packing in humiliation. An analysis from Reuters estimated the Greek side can do well if it sticks to the defense-oriented strategy of coach Fernando Santos,  a style which suited the team well in the qualifying campaign. In the stages to get to Brazil,  Santos’ team finished behind eventual Group G winners Bosnia only on goal difference, with a 3-1 loss to the Bosnians in Zenica proving their only defeat of another solid qualifying campaign – albeit in one of Europe’s weaker sections. With a playing style which makes them hard to beat but unspectacular up front, Greece chalked up an impressive record of eight wins in their 10 group matches, five of them by 1-0 scorelines, the analysis noted. If Greece suffers anywhere it’s in firepower once again as the Greeks prefer to backpedal and try to keep the other team from scoring instead of attacking aggressively, which cost them dearly in some previous campaigns. Santos has a strong core of veterans in Giorgos Karagounis, Fanis Gekas and Kostas Katsouranis. The Greeks have shown an ability to counter-attack off their defense though, with a strong front line of  Celtic’s Giorgos Samaras, Olympiacos striker Kostas Mitroglou and the tireless Dimitris Salpingidis. In the cautious world of soccer, where teams often hope for a 0-0 tie and scores are infrequent, Santos sticks to the script of trying to keep the other team off the board and hoping for a score by his own side. His motto is: “tactics first, technical ability second,” and his style can probably be described as more Hank Iba than Pat Riley, more defense than fast-break.The Greek team played dutifully, if not exciting, in Euro 201, losing to the top side Germans in the quarter finals, eight years after stunning the world by winning the European championship in Portugal in 2004, that grand Olympic year for Greece before the country’s economy went sour and so did the mood of Greeks and that play of their beloved national soccer team. After a creditable display at Euro 2012, where Greece were beaten by Germany in the quarter-finals, Santos’ men only lost out on an automatic place at Brazil 2014 to Bosnia on goal difference. An important factor of Santos’ success is his extensive knowledge of Greek football and culture from his time as a club manager, having coached some of the country’s top clubs in AEK Athens, Panathinaikos and PAOK Salonica. He lives permanently in Greece and knows the talent, while relying on team manager Takis Fyssas, who was part of Greece’s Euro 2004 winning squad, as well as working with the younger teams.Santos is betting on Mitroglou, 25, who has emerged as the team’s star with a flamboyant presence and striking ability, and shown his stuff after a disappointing career up to this year.Despite being somewhat media shy, Mitroglou – who has scored 41 goals in 84 appearances for Olympiakos – is affectionately known as “Mitrogoal” and “Pistolero” by his club’s fanatical fans for his gun-toting goal celebrations. The 2013-14 campaign has unquestionably been his breakthrough season. He became the first Greek player to score a hat-trick in the UEFA Champions League with a treble at Anderlecht in October, and has notched 14 goals in 10 matches – including three hat-tricks – in the Greek league this season, dominating play. While not noted for his pace, Mitroglou’s key attributes are his intelligent movement off the ball, physical strength and a powerful long range shot. He’ll need to have it all if Greece wants to get past the first stages in Brazil.last_img read more

World Cup 2019: All eyes on MS Dhoni’s approach as India take on West Indies

first_imgMahendra Singh Dhoni’s batting approach and position in the middle order will be the team management’s primary concern when India take on an ousted-yet-dangerous West Indies in the sixth league phase encounter of the World Cup here Thursday. As the league phase hits the home stretch, India will look to ensure a smooth passage into the semi-finals with yet another victory. But it could be easier said than done against a West Indies side, which might play party poopers with nothing to lose in their remaining few games. In fact, West Indies’ unpredictability and the former India captain’s repeated failure during the important second Powerplay overs leaves skipper Virat Kohli with a few points to ponder.Dhoni’s painfully slow approach against Afghanistan yielded 28 off 52 balls and he was roundly criticized. Even the normally restrained Sachin Tendulkar questioned the approach.”There was no positive intent,” the usually reticent Tendulkar’s observation on a TV channel has been spot on.The Indian team management knows that only too well but with four group matches left, the only option they have right now is to alter Dhoni’s batting position, possibly giving a few more deliveries to Jadhav, who can be innovative in his shot selection.Hardik Pandya is being used as a floater but the Afghanistan match showed that if he doesn’t get support from the other end, there is too much pressure on him to hit every delivery for a six.Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri till now have not been too keen to use Rishabh Pant’s firepower. Pant can come in only if the team management considers the idea of Vijay Shankar being disposable.advertisementThe West Indies is a team loaded with fast bowlers so it could be a bit easier for Dhoni to rotate the strike as he hasn’t been comfortable against the slow bowlers. Afghanistan exposed it thoroughly during the last game. There have been arguments and counter-arguments about Dhoni’s batting approach in the IPL compared to his style when playing 50-over cricket for India.Dhoni, during Chennai Super Kings various chases, would invariably target one of the inexperienced Indian domestic bowlers while playing safe cricket against the bigger international names.Against a Kagiso Rabada or a Jofra Archer, he didn’t take any risks before hitting the others in successful run-chases. A strategy needs to be worked around Dhoni’s skill sets here too to place him at a position on which he can bat freely. With his inputs and electric glovework behind the stumps an absolute necessity, this will require some tactical brainstorming by the captain and the coach. The West Indies, on the other hand, will look to finish on a high after being knocked out despite a great start against Pakistan. Andre Russell being ruled out due to a hamstring injury has been another big blow. However, the team, especially the fast bowling department, has shown tremendous potential including the young bumper-happy fast bowling duo of Sheldon Cotterell and Oshane Thomas. With Kohli and his deputy Rohit Sharma being superb horizontal bat players, it promises to be a mouth-watering contest if they employ the short-ball tactic. For the ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle, a smashing match-winning innings is due and Kohli will be praying that it doesn’t come against his team.Jasprit Bumrah’s opening spell against Gayle may set the tone while the talented duo of Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer will be asked a few questions by Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal.Against New Zealand, Carlos Brathwaite played amazing innings and took the Windies to the brink of a miraculous victory. However, Brathwaite has never been comfortable against the slow bowlers as he loves the length deliveries on the slot.In all, it could be a tougher test for India than Afghanistan but the ‘Men In Blue’ remain favourites to win the contest considering their recent form.Squads: India: Virat Kohli (captain), Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Vijay Shankar, Hardik Pandya, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wk), Kedar Jadhav, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ravindra Jadeja, Dinesh Karthik, Rishabh Pant.West Indies: Jason Holder (captain), Chris Gayle, Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer, Carlos Brathwaite, Sheldon Cottrell, Oshane Thomas, Kemar Roach, Ashley Nurse, Nicholas Pooran, Sunil Ambris, Evin Lewis, Shannon Gabriel, Darren Bravo, Fabian Allen. Also Read | World Cup 2019: Martin Guptill eyes another WC featAlso Read | New Zealand vs Pakistan, World Cup 2019: Weather Updates from Birmingham on WednesdayAlso Seelast_img read more
