Hardik Patel, the face of Gujarat’s Patidar quota agitation which was launched in 2015, has revived caste protests ahead of the crucial Assembly elections at the end of the year. The 24-year-old commerce graduate, who is active on social media, has taken the fight to the BJP government on its development claims under the ‘Gujarat Model.’What is his stand? He is demanding reservation for the Patidar community, to which he belongs, and which constitutes 14% of Gujarat’s population but has disproportionate hold over the State’s politics and economy. He has raised several issues — distress of farmers; education being too expensive for most; and the high rate of unemployment. What is his politics? Mr. Patel’s connect with the people is visible at every forum. He set up the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), which has organised several protest rallies where his fiery speeches draw huge crowds. Hailing from a middle class family in a village near Viramgam town, Mr. Patel rose to prominence with the quota agitation. Before he set up the PAAS, he was part of the Sardar Patel Group (SPG), a social outfit floated by Lalji Patel, a Patidar community leader in Mehsana district. Both leaders and their aides created dozens of social media groups to reach out to community members before launching the quota agitation in 2015.Why did protests turn violent? After a month-long agitation which mobilised lakhs of Patidars with a demand for quota in education and government jobs in around 100 rallies, the police clamped down on his supporters which led to widespread violence across the State. In August 2015, 14 persons were killed in police firing, and protesters torched public buses, police vehicles and public properties. The government had to call in the Army to bring the situation under control while mobile-based Internet services were shut for a week.In the district and taluka panchayat elections held in November 2015, the BJP was wiped out from 24 of 32 districts as the Patidars revolted against the party, which came to power essentially with their support in 1995.What did the government do? Subsequently, the police in Ahmedabad and Surat slapped sedition cases on Mr. Patel and his close aides, and they were arrested and jailed for nine months. After getting bail, he was externed from the State for six months as the High Court asked him to stay in Udaipur, in neighbouring Rajasthan. However, as soon as he returned to Gujarat, he revived the agitation, which may not be as intense and largescale as it was in 2015, but still reverberates in the Patidar-dominated areas in Saurashtra, north Gujarat and parts of Surat.“In Gujarat, the BJP has been ruling for more than two decades. If there is so much development, why are people out on the streets fighting to get jobs? Not only Patidars, even OBC communities are agitating for jobs,” Mr. Patel said, addressing villagers in Saurashtra. What lies ahead? So far, Mr. Patel has rejected all compromise offers by the State government to resolve the contentious reservation issue before the Assembly elections. The government’s latest formula to set up a State-backed corporation to help economically backward upper castes like the Patels and an inquiry commission to probe alleged police excesses during the agitation in 2015 has not cut ice with him. Whether he will succeed in his mission to dislodge the ruling party is not clear yet, but his presence gives the BJP discomfort in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home State. In Gujarat, Patidars are staunch BJP supporters and it’s with their support that the BJP wrested power from the Congress in the mid-1990s. Its first Chief Minister was Keshubhai Patel. However, now the Patidars feel that their domination over the party is on the decline as the BJP is slowly but steadily building an OBC vote-bank, giving prominence to Kolis and Thakurs, numerically significant OBC communities in the State. All along, Mr. Patel has claimed that his agitation is apolitical, and that he is a ‘social worker,’ not a politician. But ever since the protests of 2015, when he mobilised thousands of people, he has emerged as a prominent leader with significant influence over the Patidar community.Mahesh Langa
With just days to go before the Lok Sabha election in Gwalior on Sunday, Congress president Rahul Gandhi told a rally at Phoolbagh on Wednesday evening that while his party has delivered on promises made in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi “does not know how to speak the truth”.‘Cong. waived loans’Speaking in Gwalior three days after Mr. Modi addressed a BJP rally here and attacked Mr. Gandhi’s “naamdar” family, Mr. Gandhi hit out at the Prime Minister for remaining silent on his 2014 poll promises. He said the Kamal Nath government in Madhya Pradesh had waived off loans of lakhs of farmers, including two relatives of former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. “The people had so much faith in Narendra Modi and his words. He said he’ll put ₹15 lakh in every bank account, will give jobs to 2 crore youth and will give loan waivers and right prices to farmers. What happened to that? These days, Mr. Modi doesn’t talk of employment, farmers, or corruption,” said Mr. Gandhi. He added that while youth were facing unemployment and agrarian crisis was pushing farmers to end their lives, Mr. Modi was “doing his mann ki baat”.Challenge for debate“He said he’ll make Gwalior a smart city. It’s been five years. Did it happen? Wherever he goes, he lies…He talks of nationalism. I want to ask him did the Congress send Masood Azhar to Pakistan? Did the Congress make him sit on a plane and send him to Kandahar? Was it our Minister who sat in the plane? Was it our Minister who gave money to a terrorist organisation? No, it was the BJP… Narendra Modi should tell the country the truth… Narendra Modi does not know how to speak the truth,” said Mr. Gandhi, adding that he had challenged the Prime Minister to a debate on the Rafale matter.Accusing the former BJP government in the State of reducing the number of factories from 400 to 80, he said a Congress government at the Centre would work with the party’s government in the State to make Gwalior an “industrial centre again”. Chief Minister Kamal Nath, while addressing the rally in support of Congress candidate Ashok Singh, said his government had waived off loans of 21 lakh farmers, while the BJP candidate from Gwalior, Mayor Vivek Shejwalkar, had not done anything for the city.“Shivraj was yelling that loans have not been waived. His own brother and nephew’s loans have been waived,” said Mr. Nath.Mr. Singh, who has contested three times before, had lost by a margin of about 29,000 votes in 2014 to the BJP’s Narendra Singh Tomar, who went on to become a Union Minister. This time, Mr. Tomar is contesting from the neighbouring Morena constituency, which was won by late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s nephew, Anoop Mishra, in 2014.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had some bad moments over the years, but their 56-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night might be the franchise’s lowest point. The Bucs gave up 35 points to the Falcons before gaining a single first down. They trailed 49-0 with 8:11 remaining in the third quarter after an aborted snap — Tampa Bay’s fourth turnover of the game — handed Atlanta the ball on the Bucs’ 2-yard line (Steven Jackson would punch it in for a touchdown on the following play). If Atlanta hadn’t pulled their starters at that point, there was the real sense that they could have challenged Chicago’s NFL-record 73-0 obliteration of Washington in the 1940 NFL Championship Game — it was just that one-sided. As it was, the Falcons’ win was the 108th-biggest blowout in pro football history (since 1940).But that actually sells the performance short, because the score was out of hand so quickly and the margin so lopsided for most of the game; it took a pair of late Tampa Bay touchdowns to pull the margin closer to anything approaching respectability. To better quantify how the game played out, we can use what FiveThirtyEight contributor Chase Stuart calls the “game script,” which measures the average point margin at any given second in a game. And Atlanta’s game script Thursday night — +32.9 — was a doozy. Going back to 1940, it was the sixth-most dominant performance by any pro football team (playoff games are in gray):Naturally, that infamous Chicago-Washington rout was first, with a +34.9 game script. And most fans probably remember the Jacksonville Jaguars dismantling the Miami Dolphins in Dan Marino’s final NFL game, or Tom Brady throwing five second-quarter touchdowns in the snow against the Tennessee Titans. But as far as historic thrashings go, Thursday night’s ranks right up there.
Claims against the Ohio State Diving Club alleging the university did not take significant action to stop a former coach from sexually abusing a former athlete were dropped Wednesday, according to a report by the Associated Press.Former assistant diving coach William Bohonyi was accused of coercing a 16-year-old female athlete to engage in sex acts in July 2014, both on campus and during a competition in Maryland, in a lawsuit filed July 11 in Indianapolis federal district court. Bohonyi, the university’s diving club and USA Diving were named as defendants.Robert Allard, the attorney for one of the divers, said the dismissal “was based purely on procedural grounds” because the lawsuit was filed in Indiana. He said Ohio State said Indiana did not have proper jurisdiction over the university, and that he intends to file a new lawsuit in Ohio against Ohio State. As of Friday, no lawsuit has been filed against Ohio State in Ohio.“We continue to believe more than ever that there was a cover up of massive proportions and we intend to hold OSU fully accountable for its unconscionable conduct in failing to arrest and allowing a known predator to continue to molest children including our client,” Allard told The Lantern.Ohio State spokesman Ben Johnson had previously said the university immediately notified Franklin County Children’s Services, the Ohio State University Police Division, Maryland law enforcement and USA Diving about the abuse by Bohonyi when it first learned of the allegations in 2014.Johnson said on Friday that the university is pleased to be dismissed from the lawsuit.“We have always maintained that — fully consistent with our core value of protecting the safety and well-being of those we serve in our community — the university handled this matter appropriately,” Johnson said. The Lantern obtained records of Ohio State’s internal investigation and found conflicting accounts of the relationship between the club member and Bohonyi. Though investigators were not able to conclude, at the time, if sexual harassment claims were valid, the university found evidence to support a consensual romantic relationship between the two. Ohio State fired Bohonyi on Aug. 29, 2014 because the relationship violated university policy. The investigation conducted by Ohio State found the university first learned of the relationship on Aug. 10, 2014.According to the AP report, Bohonyi and USA Diving remain defendants in the lawsuit. The Lantern reached out for comment from Ohio State and Bohonyi, but did not receive a response by the time of publication.Updated at 11:16 p.m. on Friday to include the information from Robert Allard.Updated at 1:02 p.m. on Friday to include the statement from Ben Johnson.
Borussia Monchengladbach beat Bayern Munich 3-0 at the Allianz Arena just last weekend in the German BundesligaAfter Borussia Monchengladbach was able to beat Bayern Munich 3-0 at the Allianz Arena, Gladbach’s vice president Rainer Bonhof asks for tranquility.“For me, it’s a little too early to look too much into things.
