10 Alexis Sanchez: Football Manager 2008 – HIT – Sanchez was at Udinese in 2008, but is now scoring for fun at Arsenal having recently signed in a £30m deal after a spell at Barcelona, which began in 2011. He scored 39 goals in 88 La Liga games and had a very impressive 2014 World Cup for Chile. Romelu Lukaku: Football Manager 2010 – HIT – Lukaku is seen as one of the Premier League’s top strikers and from a 17-year-old Anderlecht striker, he has morphed into a strong and quick striker, who went from Chelseas fourth choice striker to Evertons leading goalscorer. That was in between a prolific loan at West Brom that saw him score a hat-trick against Man United. Fabio: Football Manager 2012 – MISS – Fabio, along with his twin brother Rafael were quality in the game, but the 24-year-old has now dropped down to the Championship with Cardiff City after a loan at QPR. Alexandre Pato: Football Manager 2008 – MISS – When he was just 17 he was supposed to be the next big thing in football and after an initially promising start to his career at Milan in 2007, injuries curtailed his career in Europe. He was transferred to Corinthians in January 2013 and is currently at loan at Sao Paulo where he is on the fringes of the first team. 10 10 Gareth Bale: Football Manager 2008 – HIT – Bale was bought as a left-back, who was deadly from set-pieces. However, in the real world Bale was almost sold on the cheap to Alex McLeish’s Birmingham in 2008. Just as well he stayed put having earned Spurs £85m when Real Madrid bought him in 2013. Kerlon: Football Manager 2006 – MISS – He’s the Brazilian famous for his ‘seal dribble’ where he would run while bouncing the ball on his forehead and end face down on the turf once the defender had been appropriately humiliated. He moved from Cruzeiro to Inter via Chievo in a complicated deal in 2008 but failed to make a single appearance in his four years at the San Siro. His time there included loan spells at Chievo and Ajax as well as Brazilian clubs Nacional Esporte Clube and Parana Clube. Had a moderately successful spell at Fujieda MYFC between 2012 and January 2014 in Japans third division before a persistent knee injury forced him to leave the club. 10 10 Vincent Kompany: Football Manager 2006 – HIT – You may have heard of him. Man City’s two-time Premier League-winning captain is now one of the best defenders in the world. On Twitter @Ostlund_wept revealed he bought the big Belgian from Anderlecht when managing Southampton where ‘the rock’ retired. Yann M’Vila: Football Manager 2010 – MISS – French international M’Vila’s talent on the pitch is rivalled by a series of controversial incidents off it. The Rennes midfielder was a decent signing if you could get him and has been scouted by a series of top European clubs due to his ability to retain possession and superb passing vision. However, after so much promise he is currently playing for Inter on loan from Russian outfit Rubin Kazan. 10 10 10 Marco Verratti: Football Manager 2010 – HIT – Verratti, the Italy and PSG playmaker’s reputation is growing bigger by the day in European football. He is seen as the natural successor to Pirlo in the Italian national side and back in 2010 was playing for lowly Pescara as a gifted 17-year-old. 10 10 Lock the door, remember to feed the cat and get the tracksuit/suit ready depending on what sort of manager you are because Football Manager 2015 is here. This means we are preparing to spend the rest of the year hidden away trying to devise a plan to carry Basingstoke Town into the Champions League. But first we’ll need a couple of whizz-kids to help us.
